What is health?
What Does Health Mean to You? A Question Worth Asking
When you hear the word “health,” what comes to mind? Is it a number on the scale, the ability to run a mile without stopping, or perhaps eating a balanced diet? Maybe it’s something deeper, something more personal. In a world saturated with quick fixes and ever-changing wellness trends, we’re often bombarded with definitions of what health should be. But what does it truly mean to you?
As a trainer, I’ve come to realize that health is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It’s as unique as the individuals striving for it. For some, health might mean waking up without pain, finally feeling free in their body after years of discomfort. For others, it could be the mental clarity that comes from consistent exercise or the joy of playing with their kids without feeling exhausted. And for many, health is tied to emotional resilience, the ability to face life’s challenges with strength and grace.
Asking the Bigger Questions
So, I ask you: What does real health mean to you?
Is it about feeling confident in your skin, free from societal pressures? Is it the energy to pursue passions and dreams without physical limitations holding you back? Or perhaps it’s the quiet satisfaction of knowing you’re nourishing your body, mind, and spirit in a way that feels sustainable.
These are not easy questions to answer, but they’re essential. By understanding your own definition of health, you can begin to prioritize what truly matters and let go of external expectations that don’t align with your goals or values.
Expanding the Definition of Health
True health encompasses more than physical fitness. It’s about balance and integration:
Physical Health: Moving your body in ways that feel good, addressing pain, mobility, and strength issues,
Nutritional Health: Fueling your body with nutrient-dense foods to meet your body's energy needs.
Mental Health: Cultivating a mindset that supports growth, gratitude, and resilience.
Emotional Health: Acknowledging and processing your emotions, connecting with others, and fostering relationships that uplift you.
Spiritual Health: Finding purpose, meaning, and a sense of connection to something greater than yourself.
A Call to Reflect
I invite you to take a moment to reflect on your own journey. What would achieving true health look like for you? Is there something you’ve been neglecting that needs attention? Are there old definitions of health that no longer serve you?
Understanding your personal definition of health can be empowering. It shifts the focus from what others think you should be doing to what feels right for you. And when you’re clear on what health means to you, it becomes easier to make choices aligned with your goals.
